Biography

Pietro Asinari is the Scientific Director of the Italian National Institute for Metrology Research (INRiM), Full Professor in the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Torino and member of the Board of the PhD in Energetics. He graduated with honors (summa cum laude) in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 and received his PhD in Energetics in 2005, in collaboration with Virginia Tech (USA), winning the ENI-Italgas Award for Energy and the Environment for his PhD dissertation. He has been invited speaker and/or plenary lecturer (34 times), invited lecturer for advanced courses worldwide (13) and invited visitor for research stays abroad (6). He was formerly a member of the Operational Management Board of the European Council for Material Modeling (EMMC) from 2014 to 2019 and Project Technical Advisor (PTA) of the European Commission (EC), Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, Unit D.3 — Advanced Materials and Nanotechnologies from 2014 to 2016. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Heliyon Energy (Cell Press) since 2016. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Italian Union of Thermo-fluid dynamics (UIT) since 2016. From 2016 to 2020, he was a member of the Executive Board of “Alta Scuola Politecnica - ASP” (http://www.asp-poli.it/), a multidisciplinary and unique international honour program, created by Politecnico di Milano e Politecnico di Torino. His research lies in the field of energy and environmental sustainability, in particular regarding use of renewable sources for the production of drinking water, heat and mass transfer in energy devices, and numerical modelling of materials. In particular, materials modelling provides an essential contribution in the analysis of experiments, procedures and measurement standards, which are essential for the digital transformation of metrological services. From 2008 to 2019, he was very active in securing research funds for his team, mainly from the H2020 Programme, acting as Principal Investigator (5 projects), Co-PI (1 project with MIT), Unit Leader (7 projects) and Group Leader (5 projects). He has on-going collaborations with Argonne National Laboratory (USA), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), University of Illinois at Chicago (USA) and Imperial College (UK). He has published 110+ articles in international journals, including Energy & Environmental Science, Science Advances and Nature Sustainability.
