The PhD Days in Energy are back: two days of presentations and dialogue between doctoral students and industry experts

Aula Magna e Castello del Valentino

The PhD Days in Energy are organized over two days by the PhD Program in Energy and involve not only doctoral students, but also their supervisors and international experts in the field. These experts will share their insights and perspectives on topics such as internationalization and the application of AI to energy-related challenges.
On December 3, 2025, starting at 9:00 AM, doctoral students—grouped according to the program’s four main research areas—will have the opportunity to present their research results on the stage of the Aula Magna at Politecnico di Torino, using the “PechaKucha” format.
PechaKucha is an innovative presentation style that originated in Japan and follows a simple rule: 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds. In total, each talk lasts 6 minutes and 40 seconds, encouraging conciseness, clarity, and visual impact. This method is ideal for communicating complex ideas quickly and effectively, stimulating attention and creativity.
For PhD students in Energy, PechaKucha represents a unique opportunity to share their research findings and interact with peers from other fields. The presentations will be organized according to the program’s main research areas:

  • Building physics and energy systems in future buildings and communities
  • Industrial energy systems, technologies and materials for the energy transition
  • Sustainable nuclear energy
  • Sustainable propulsion and energy systems
This interdisciplinary setting fosters knowledge exchange and the creation of new collaborations. Throughout the day, each research area will present its work using the PechaKucha format, promoting dialogue across different sectors and contributing to a more cohesive and innovative scientific community.
At the end of the event, the best presenters—selected for clarity, originality, and communication skills—will receive an award in recognition of their excellence and contribution to knowledge dissemination within the PhD program.
On December 4, 2025, activities will move to the Valentino Castle for two engaging workshops. In the morning, the first workshop will focus on “Energy in the Age of AI: Modeling Materials and Systems for a Sustainable Transition,” featuring contributions from four international experts:
  • Prof. Antonio GARCIA, CMT-Thermal Engines, Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (Spain)
  • Prof. Piero BARALDI, Department of Energy, Politecnico di Milano (Italy)
  • Dr. Annalisa CARDELLINI, University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (Switzerland)
  • Prof. Massimo FIORENTINI, Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, Aarhus University (Denmark)
In the afternoon, the second workshop will address the internationalization of the PhD Program in Energy. Speakers include:
  • Prof. Roberto ZANINO – Energy Department “Galileo Ferraris,” Politecnico di Torino (Italy)
  • Prof. Renato Machado MONARO – University of São Paulo (Brazil), with a talk titled “The Magalhaes Network and its Role in the Internationalization of PhD”
  • Dr. Ilaria LUCENTINI – Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain), with a speech on “The MSCA UNITE!Energy”
  • Dr. Evren UNSAL – GSNL-PTX/I/Energy Transition Center Amsterdam (The Netherlands), presenting “SHELL Policy of Collaboration with Academia in the PhD Domain”
  • Dr. Stefano MEZZAVILLA – SNAM Research (Italy), with a talk on “SNAM Initiative Call4Fellows and Policy of Collaboration with Academia in the PhD Domain”
